Giving Podcast Tales a Life Beyond Audio
Following the success of the first season of The Wheel of Misfortune, BBC Sounds partnered with Bearded Fellows to spearhead the Series Two launch campaign. The initiative aimed to reignite excitement in existing fans and introduce new listeners to the podcast using a creative social campaign.
With live-action production restricted during the lockdown, BBC Sounds needed an approach that could transform the show's funniest moments into highly shareable social content. Rather than relying on static artwork or simple audio clips, we proposed a series of original character-led animations that brought each story vividly to life.
By turning unforgettable podcast moments into visual comedy, the campaign gave audiences another reason to engage with the series while staying true to the irreverent personality of the show.
Putting Faces to Funny Stories
Working closely with the BBC Sounds team, we reviewed the most popular episodes from Series One to identify the stories audiences had responded to most enthusiastically. Hosted by Fern Brady and Alison Spittle, the podcast features comedians and callers sharing extraordinary real-life stories. From these episodes, we developed five animated shorts featuring memorable moments from guests including Phil Wang and Jamali Maddix.
Because the audience already knew these personalities by their voices alone, recognisable character design became central to the creative approach. We collaborated with illustrator Amiluu to develop an original visual style that balanced caricature with authenticity, ensuring each guest felt instantly familiar while remaining playful and expressive.
Using the original podcast recordings as the soundtrack, every animation was carefully choreographed to amplify the humour rather than replace it, adding visual gags and storytelling that enhanced the comedy already present in the conversations.
Building a Visual World
To create consistency across the campaign, we established two recurring environments: the podcast studio itself and the world each story was taking place in.
This allowed every animation to transition naturally between reality and imagination, giving viewers a clear connection between the hosts and the increasingly absurd situations unfolding in each story. Even phone-in guests became animated characters, with a personified telephone acting as a recurring visual device that tied the series together, maintaining a cohesive visual language.
The recurring visual system gave the series a recognisable identity while remaining flexible enough for every story to feel unique.
Anything But Misfortunate
By combining illustration, animation and storytelling, Bearded Fellows gave The Wheel of Misfortune a visual identity that extended beyond the podcast itself. During lockdown, when audiences were spending more time online, the campaign transformed embarrassing stories into highly shareable content that entertained existing fans while introducing a new audience to the series.
At a time when people were looking for entertainment from home, the animations equipped BBC Sounds with a fresh way to keep audiences laughing, sharing, and coming back for more.
