Making Complex Technology Easier to Understand
Made Smarter helps UK manufacturers to embrace digital technologies, innovation and new ways of working. But for businesses considering these technologies, understanding what they actually mean - and how they can be applied - isn't always straightforward.
Made Smarter came to Bearded Fellows to create a series of explainer animations that could make complex manufacturing technologies easier to understand, using clear visual storytelling to bring abstract ideas to life.
Turning Technical Ideas into Visual Stories
The challenge was to convey sophisticated concepts without making the content feel overly technical. Subjects such as adaptive manufacturing, data analysis, and augmented and virtual reality can be difficult to explain through words alone.
We worked with Made Smarter to shape the scripts around the key messages each animation needed to communicate, then translated those ideas into visual stories through custom storyboard illustrations and vector artwork.
The creative approach used simple visual metaphors, character-led storytelling, and clear graphic devices to make the information easier to follow, while retaining the substance behind each subject.
A Consistent Creative Language
Across the series, we developed a distinctive animation style that worked within the Made Smarter brand.
The visual language combined Made Smarter's yellow, black and white palette with softer greys and light blue, creating a consistent look across different subjects while keeping the information clear and accessible.
Each animation had its own narrative and characters, but the shared visual approach made the series look cohesive.
Bringing Innovation to Life
The animations covered a range of subjects, from adaptive manufacturing and AR and VR through to data analysis, decarbonisation and real-world manufacturing case studies.
Voice actors were selected to suit the different characters and narratives, with consideration given to age, gender and personality. Licensed music and sound design added pace and energy while keeping the focus on the story.
The result was a series of engaging, accessible animations that gave Made Smarter a clear way to communicate complex manufacturing technologies across its website and social channels.
